More choice, jobs and investment for Dumfries
November 2023 saw the opening of the new Food Warehouse at Cuckoo Bridge Retail Park. Since its arrival in Dumfries, it has proved a very popular addition with shoppers locally.
NewRiver, the owners of the retail park now have exciting new plans to return Next to Dumfries, which has been greatly missed locally since the former Next Store in the Loreburn Centre closed in 2018.
Currently, there is a Next click-and-collect pod at Cuckoo Bridge which serves a large number of customers, but there is now the opportunity to open a modern, full-scale Next store in a unit which has been vacant for more than three years.
Instead of travelling 30 miles or more to the nearest full-range Next store in Carlisle, customers will have a convenient trip for fashion and homewares.
To bring Next back to Dumfries, the Council will need to lift a restriction on Cuckoo Bridge which says that it should be used only for the sale of bulky goods like furniture, DIY and homewares.
NewRiver have been trying very hard to attract companies that sell bulky goods, but there simply isn't any interest. They have approached just about every company out there.

Next’s return to Dumfries – key benefits
- An investment of some £2 million into Dumfries;
- Significant new employment, with numbers rising from four at present (in the click and collect pod) to around 35 jobs (approximately 20 full time equivalent);
- A further step towards revitalisation of the Cuckoo Bridge Retail Park, bringing the return of a market-leading retailer to Dumfries;
- Re-use of floorspace which will otherwise stay vacant and have a negative impact on the look of the retail park; and
- A reduction in the need for Next customers to make long trips to stores elsewhere, enhancing consumer choice and helping to keep spending local rather than leaking out to destinations further afield such as Carlisle.
Food Warehouse
Food Warehouse is Iceland's newest store format and is one of the fastest growing British supermarkets. It offers a superb range of chilled, frozen and fresh products and with bigger pack options on well-known brands you can stock up for less on all your favourites.
It has a stylish, top quality warehouse fit out and provides the value of a wholesale store. We think it is just what is needed to help local people with the current spiralling cost of living.
